Summer, Sachs, and Drive-In

So I tried to think of some way to say "drive-in" that began with an "S" so that all 3 things in the title would begin with the same letter, but unfortunately I could not...Still, those are the three main topics of this post.

First off the bat is "summer."  I'm pretty sure I've mentioned it in previous posts, but just in case I haven't I will again here.  I've been pretty nervous the last few months about finding something to do this summer.  I had originally planned to get an externship (like an internship, only you pay regular tuition and earn credit) both this summer and next summer so I could graduate a semester early, but after I didn't get as many interviews as I would have wanted I didn't think that was going to happen.  So I was really surprised the other day when I got an e-mail saying that I'd been accepted for an externship with the Maricopa County Superior Court (the local trial court).  I'm not sure which judge I'm going to be working with, but it will be a good experience.  Seeing how an actual courtroom works, getting to meet local attorneys, and just extending my overall network of contacts will be a great experience.  I also had an interview this last Friday with the Office of Government Relations for the City of Phoenix (pretty much the City's lobbying office), so I could end up splitting my summer between there and the court.  We'll just have to see how everything shakes out...

Second on the list is Sachs.  Not Sachs Fifth Avenue (Janessa doesn't really like shopping, and even if she did I wouldn't be blogging about it), but Albie Sachs.  He's the former Chief-Justice of the South African Supreme Court, an author, and was heavily involved in South Africa's anti-apartheid movement.  Not only was he imprisoned for his work against the regime, he also lost his right arm when South African security forces bombed his car while he was in exile in Mozambique.  Anyways, he was down here in Tempe last week, so Janessa and I were able to go see him speak at the Arizona Historical Society.  He had a lot of cool stories, but the coolest one of all was how he was eventually able to forgive the person who was responsible for the bombing that cost him his right arm.  Definitely something to try and live up to...

Now for the last topic, "Drive-In."  As you might have guessed, Janessa and I went to a drive-in movie last night.  It was the first time in a really long time for either of us, so it was really fun.  Being able to go also made us love AZ even more, as it was still pretty nice out from 7:30-midnight.  We saw Dear John and The Blindside.  After the downer that was Dear John, we were happy to end the night on a good note.

Well, that's what's going on with us here in Tempe.  Janessa's still working, and I'm still going to school.  We'll let you all know if anything else interesting happens...
